Choosing Toric Lenses
Choosing toric lenses may cost you more than regular, spherical lenses but this is a specialized type of lens and if you can afford it, it's a great solution for people with medium to high amounts of astigmatism. Initially, it costs more because it requires longer to find the right fit and this takes more of your eye practitioner's time. It also requires a special expertise in the field. Regular spherical lenses aren't designed to address astigmatism, because they have the same level of power all round their perimeters so that they can rotate easily with the movement of the eye . This is the second reason toric lenses cost more- he lenses themselves are harder to produce and they cost more than regular contacts. There are exceptions for people with very mild astigmatism, such as regular soft contact lenses that are designed with a higher powered spherical soft lens to mask a small astigmatic correction, but this may turn out to be a lengthy process. High powered soft contacts need to be fitted purposely for you and this may take several attempts before you're satisfied. This is a course of action only if you have a very mild condition and a serious aversion to toric contacts.
As regular lenses have an even amount of power all round their perimeters so that they can rotate easily, they can be worn comfortably throughout the day with no need of adjustments. Toric lenses, on the other hand, are designed to have two different corrective properties each from different angles, in deference to the kind of astigmatism you have. They should not move at all while on the eye because any movement will automatically reduce visual acuity and some are even ballasted for that reason. The bottom half of the lens is made slightly thicker and heavier in order to weight down on the lens and keep it immobile. Most people choose soft toric lenses because they are far easier to get acclimated to, though some few do choose rigid toric contacts. Toric RGPs provide slightly sharper vision and they tend to move around far less than soft lenses. They also retain their shape for a longer period of time.
