Eye glasses or Contact lenses

Surgery for astigmatism mainly concentrates on the reshaping the cornea. Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery and Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) are the two important surgeries for astigmatism.

In LASIK surgery, keratome, an instrument, is used to correct the curvature of the cornea. In Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), the outer layer of the cornea is removed before the curvature is corrected.

Laser-assisted subepithelial keratomileusis (LASEK) is another type of refractive surgery used to treat astigmatism. In this surgery, the outer layer of the cornea is folded back. This type of surgery is performed on people who have a high risk of eye injury.

Refractive surgeries are normally performed only on healthy eyes. The risks and the benefits of refractive surgery should be thoroughly discussed with your ophthalmologist before opting for it.

Several new treatments are available for astigmatism which includes surgically implanting contact lenses, use of radio waves to correct the irregularity of cornea and customized contact lenses. Since, most these new treatments are in its initial stage, it is better to take professional option before opting for them. Information regarding new treatments can also be availed from numerous other sources.
