Biofeedback is a type of alternative medicine in which a subject's heart rate, blood pressure, and other signs are measured, and this information is then sent to the subject in real-time. This allows them to become aware of their own bodies and also allows them to gain control of many physiological aspects of themselves. While these bodily processes have traditionally been automatic, providing information to subjects about their own bodies has allowed them to gain control over these processes. Biofeedback was first developed and studied during the 1960s, and interest in the subject has varied since this time. Currently, the subject is gaining popularity in a number of different circles. Many researchers are looking at biofeedback techniques in order to treat a number of diseases, most notably ADHD. Some miniature biofeedback machines have been commercially developed, and are being sold on the market to be used at home. This technology is expected to increase in usage within the next 10 years.
