Blepharitis – An Introduction

Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids and eyelashes. It is a commonly seen disorder and is characterized by redness and swelling. Dried crusts or white flaky skin are also seen in most cases. It is a recurring condition hence hard to treat. Blepharitis rarely causes damage to eyesight and is a not contagious.

Eyelids play a vital role in protecting our eyes. Although a simple organ from outside, the eyelids have a highly complex structure. The inside of the eyelid is made up of a moist tissue. The space in between the outer skin and moist tissue is occupied by glands (meibomian glands) and muscles. Meibomian glands, which secrete the oily substance found in tears, are located at the tip of the eyelid along with the eyelashes. Blepharitis most commonly affects the area in and around the glands.

Blepharitis is the result of bacterial growth in the area surrounding the glands. The bacterial infection increases, if there is a dysfunction in the glands. It is one of the most widely seen eye disorder in the United States and affects all age group.
