Eyelids play a vital role in protecting our eyes. Although a simple organ from outside, the eyelids have a highly complex structure. The inside of the eyelid is made up of a moist tissue. The space in between the outer skin and moist tissue is occupied by glands (meibomian glands) and muscles. Meibomian glands, which secrete the oily substance found in tears, are located at the tip of the eyelid along with the eyelashes. Blepharitis most commonly affects the area in and around the glands.
